Hello Mense!

Welcome to the inner workings of my chaotic design mind.

I’m Jasmine Brown, a.k.a Grootbek herself, a graphic designer, illustrator and character creator from Joburg South Africa. Grootbek is an Afrikaans word, a nickname given to me by my family which directly translate to “Big Mouth” and essentially means… I talk A LOT. But that’s my super power. I am a coloured South African woman, a people who for years weren’t allowed a voice, weren’t allowed a space to express our unique perspectives. I speak when I need to, when others cannot, through my designs, through my illustrations and through my writing. There is nothing more empowering than using your voice to speak about what you love openly and honestly. 

I create with the sole purpose of bringing joy to anyone who sees my work. I love creating characters with accentuated body parts that make them look lopsided and interesting, posters littered with a collage of illustrations, brand identities that make the brands I design for stand out from their competitors. I’m a storyteller at heart, so being able to use my design skills and illustrations to tell stories whether they be brand stories, comics or campaign narrative. 

 I cannot wait to see how far I can push myself creatively!
